After a torrential rain, my classmate Victor walked into the offices to find THIS. Whoa, flooding. We're not sure how it happened. Fortunately ... Jan happened to be walking by right then, when I was looking at the mess, and she sent a crew of people to dry it. They were working on it for days, tearing some wall boards up and blowing air with blowers. Grad students evacuated to the kitchens for a time. It's about dry now. We just have to replace the chairs. The construction is starting to look like the drawings! This is our the door near our lab. It used to be the side of the building before this addition was added on. Soon, they're going to bust down the entire wall near our lab with hammers. I have NO IDEA how loud that will sound! It's exciting. These large locks are often on the doors connecting us to the new construction area - see pick above. I am not sure why. Are they afraid we'll sneak in and fall off the balcony? Hmm. Maybe. I don't think I would do that, but if I was in an adventuresome enough mood - twice my normal average - I *might* do that. Thus the gigantic locks, to keep curious grad students at bay. I found this cake in Rollins while imaging an RNA gel. I was told there was a gathering for a 91-year-old professor! That's quite amazing. A lot of people were attending. Yuan presented this cake in lab meeting for everyone who came to the her 3rd year practice talk. We cut it and it was GREEN inside. It looked tremendously like green fuzzy moss to me. It didn't taste like anything in particular - very mild - very fluffy. I'm actually really not sure why this was taken. >.> But it looks classic in black and white. I don't even know who took it. All I know is that it was posted to wechat - most of the lab is in a group chat app that everyone replies and says inane things to. I've recently been appended to it and amused. Apparently, Victor was supposed to sing recently at some talent show this weekend. I have no idea why or if it happened. I guess I'll find out this week. Ah look - Kevin is wearing "Yvonne's" lab coat! Didn't notice that until now. He was wearing green tough gloves of beast - the most tough gloves made - because he was working with HF acid: hydrofluoric acid. It's a weak acid, but it happens to also dissolve bone. Yuan told Kevin not to use it when SHE was in the lab. He was trying to dissolve his gold nanoparticles and release the DNA on them. I'm not sure how he got this hole in them. Don't worry. I'm sure it wasn't acid caused. This photo was also posted to WeChat. If you squint, you might be able to see the person asleep back there in this truck. I couldn't believe someone was sleeping in a chair in the back of a truck with no seat belt ... this is a very dangerous situation, I think. But it did make for an interesting picture. My mom made all this bacon on Saturday. It was tasty. And that's the story of this week, folks!
